Blogs and Blogging

Just as a young child is overwhelmed by her first visit to a large bookshop or library so are many people at a loss concerning the vast resources and mass information the internet has to offer.

Likewise, as new authors attempt to find a readership among the millions of new books released as time moves on, so new blog writers are frustrated by their inability to find readers on the internet. People new to websites and the internet will have a great many incorrect concepts and misinformation to address before they are able to understand what they are doing.

This can be even harder for people who employ a webmaster to build a site, as a website is just the first of many steps that need to be taken to find success on the internet.

"What is a blog and why should I care", most people will say at first. They can't even begin to think why they would ever want to go online, blogging on about life in a Blog. They cannot see a difference between a blog and a website. They are curious, they read about making money, they try a few things and then they lose interest - because although basic things are simple, there is still much to learn.

I know from frequent conversations with customers in bookshops that most people's first encounter with a home computer is the virtual version of the traditional card game called solitaire. They arrive in the bookshop about a week later, often recommended by a computer salesman or a neighbor, sheepishly asking for a Dummies book on Windows . So aptly named because computers make us feel like dummies, this tutorial series of books will guide their first attempts to draw with a mouse, write a simple letter in word and send their first email.

Sooner or later the Internet will be connected and notepad, paint and defragging will be fast forgotten. Hesitantly at first they will do a search with google and quite soon after, they'll land on a blog page. They may be unaware that its a blog and assume its just a normal webpage but eventually through reading or conversation they will start to understand what a blog is and may be tempted to start to write to a blog of their own. They'll probably go looking for free blog sites.

A Blog is the easiest way to have a presence on the web. No webmaster or programmer is required to design it for you. The software is already installed on a free blog site just waiting for a word from you.

Hello World! This is my first blog post!

There are many free blog sites where you can get started straight away.

Whether someone is wanting to maintain an online journal and photo album to share with wide flung relatives or owns a small business that they wish to advertise using a news format, a blog is easily the cheapest and easiest web platform to use while you are learning how to do it. It really is just a case of point and click. There are only a few things to learn, such as where to sign up, where to post and "Where on earth did I put my login link?!".

Blogging in fact may quickly become their favourite new hobby especially if they enjoy computers and writing. Perhaps they will discover and start their first blog on free blog sites such as My Space or Live Space or a family member may send them a link to their own blog and show them how to get a Blogger or Wordpress Blog.

Blogging is fun. Whether we blog about our families, our thoughts, things we love or hate, our business, our hobbies or our travels - it's just fun. Our teenagers often forget that the internet is a public forum and there are some scary news articles about the hurt caused by mean gossip and the sharing of private pictures on the internet. There are dangers and things you need to be careful of when blogging, but overall - blogging is fun.

Nothing stays static however and after we've made a few posts, then we wonder how we can decorate our blogs. Just like we want nice furniture and ornaments, and colours and pictures on our living room walls, we soon want our blogs to reflect our personalities. We want a header picture that is attractive, we want to know how to put a video on a blog, we want to add a tune somewhere and pictures. We want to fill all those empty spaces going down the sidebars.

We see what other people do and we want to do it too. We read about people making some money from blogging and we wonder if we could too. Then one day....
